What to Do in the First Hour After a Sewage Backup
A sewage backup is not the same emergency as a burst water pipe. What's coming up through your toilet, drain, or floor drain is Category 3 black water — contaminated with bacteria, viruses, and parasites — and how you handle the first hour matters as much as the cleanup itself.
1. Stop using water and plumbing in the house
Every flush, shower, or load of laundry adds more water to a system that's already backing up, and can push contamination further into the home. Shut off water use in every fixture until a crew has assessed the source.
2. Keep people and pets out of the affected area
Raw sewage carries pathogens that household cleaning products aren't rated to neutralize. Close the door if you can, and keep kids and pets away from standing water or anything it has touched.
3. Don't try to mop or wet-vac it yourself
A household wet-vac isn't built for Category 3 water, and using one risks spreading contamination to parts of the home the backup never reached. This is a job for certified extraction equipment and proper PPE, not a mop and bucket.
4. Turn off HVAC if the backup is near a return vent
If standing sewage is anywhere near a floor-level HVAC return, switch the system off. Contaminated air moving through ductwork can spread the problem to rooms the water never touched.
5. Start documenting, but don't delay the call to do it
A few phone photos of the affected area — taken quickly, from a safe distance — help support an insurance claim later. Our crews document damage thoroughly once on-site, so don't feel like you need a complete record before calling.
